ISHSHA History Highlights
1973: Indiana high school hockey begins with four teams playing a round-robin schedule.
1974: The Hoosier League is incorporated as the first high school league in the state.
1975: First State Tournament held; Gary Andrean defeats Musnter 4-3.
1978: Coca-Cola comes on as a tournament sponsor; Matt Crace Memorial Award established.
1980: Hoosier League becomes State Tournament host; Carmel Ice Skadium is the Tournament site.
1982: ISHSHA incorporates and establishes bylaw, using IHSAA regulations as a guideline.
1983: State Tournament divided into two classes, 3-A and 2-A; Howard Guitard Memorial Award established.
1988: Class 1-A added; Class 4-A designation established to recognized the Culver Academy varsity team; the Indiana All Star Classic established for the All Star teams from the high school leagues.
1991: Robert Gillikin Award established.
1993: Hall of Fame Award instituted, with Dr. Morris French the first recipient.
1998: State Tournament celebrates its 25th. Anniversary; 32 teams participate.
2000: Tournament format changed to round robin, with two pools in each of four divisions ; Class 1-A is divided into
Tier I and Tier II to allow all teams to participate in the tournament; St. John added as the Tier II site.
2001: President’s Award established to honor hard-working volunteers who support high school hockey; Nate Schallert
of Indianapolis is the first recipient.
2002: Class 4-A re-established for the state’s independent teams; Fort Wayne host Class 1- A.
2003: The Nick Wehrling Memorial Award is established; Henry G. Schallert Team Academic Award is established to
honor the team with the highest GPA.
2004: Class are renamed 5-A through 1-A, in keeping with other high school sports; the class for the state’s elite independent teams is eliminated when Park Tudor does not field a team.
2005: South Bend host Class 1-A
2006: The Pepsi Coliseum host the Championship Games for Class 5-A through 1-A.
2007: The Illiana League resumes play.
2009: The Roy Chin Award and the Hobey Baker Award established.
2010: North Central Panthers change the team name to Zionsville Arctic Eagles. Chicago Showcase changes tournament name to America’s Showcase and will be hosted in Pittsburg, PA in 2010. USA Hockey will host the first annual National High School Hockey Tournament in Chicago, IL. Indiana will participate in this and America’s Showcase.
2013: Finals played at Notre Dame for the first time in State history.
2014: Finals played at Fort Wayne for the first time in State history.
2015: Finals were back at the newly refurbished Indiana Farmers Coliseum at the State Fair grounds in Indianapolis.
2016: Class 4-A re-established for the state’s independent teams
2017: Finals played at the Ice Box in South Bend for the first time in the State history and a Women's Team Indiana has been formed and will be competing in the America's Showcase for the first time.
